This was a great way to kick off the start of the One-Design season at LYC. Saturday brought us breezes that we dream about and pray for all summer – 15 knots steady with gusts to 20, coming in from the East at 075 degrees. So we had some deep rock-and-roll to add to the pleasure. Sunday morning we awoke to fog and a breeze of “minus 2” but about a half hour before the start a nice southerly filled in and kept us cheerful for the entire afternoon. We completed four races for the regulars, and five for the 5o5s.

The big fleets were the Shields and the 5o5s, who registered 13 and 18 boats, though a few had last minute snags and didn’t make the starts, so we had 10 and 9 that actually sailed.
The honors for the day were as follows: In the Etchells Fleet, Commodore Dave Smalley and son Greg traded places several times with Chris Marx, with George and Tom but finally Dave took the gold, and Chris the silver.
In the International One Design Fleet, Tony Huston scored four bullets to take the honors over Marion Maneker. In the Shields Fleet, Com Crocker combined with his new partner, Dual Macintyre, to step on to the podium for first place.
Fred Werblow was in the hunt as usual, but had to settle for second place, a mere one point ahead of the team of Pat Leonard and P. J. O’Shea, who took home the trophy for third. The S-Boat fleet joined us just for Sunday, and Howard Howard and his partner Bill Simmons took the applause. The 5o5s had plenty of excitement, especially Saturday, as several sailors demonstrated that they were also good swimmers! Home grown talent prevailed as LYC’s own Ted Ferrarone walked away with the first place trophy.
