LYC Juniors Qualify for Youth World Championship

Jan. 19-21, 2013

Clearwater, FL

Two LYC juniors qualified for the 2013 International Sailing Federation’s Youth World Championship in the International 420 class.  Casey Klingler, with crew Fiona Walsh of American YC, won the qualifying regatta held over Martin Luther King Day weekend by 11 points.  Klingler, a high school junior, will compete in the girls International 420 class at the 2013 Youth Worlds, to be held in July in Limassol, Cyprus.  Henry Fernberger, crewing for Wade Waddell of Florida, placed second at the qualifier, and will be the boys representative in the International 420 class.  This is the third consecutive year that an LYC junior will compete at the Youth World Championship.

Casey Klingler and Henry Fernberger qualified for the 2013 Youth World Championship.

Klingler and Walsh took the regatta lead in race six, and closed the event in style with wins in the final two races.  Waddell and Fernberger had a closer contest, needing to hold off LYC member and 2011 Youth World Team members Reinier Eenkema van Dijk and Spencer McDonough in the final race to clinch the berth.  Both Klingler and Fernberger were also named to the US Sailing Development Team along with Eenkema van Dijk.  The US Sailing Development Team is a program that US Sailing uses to identify promising young sailors and help them prepare to compete at the Olympic level.  Fernberger is also competing in the International 470 class at the ISAF Sailing World Cup event in Miami January 28-February 2 to start his Olympic training.

Several other LYC teams competed at the qualifier.  Drew Gallagher with crew Finn Mundinger finished eighth in the International 420s, and Matthew Mollerus, crewing for Duncan Williford of Lauderdale YC, finished fourth in the 29er fleet.  Results
