420 Sailors Excel at National Regattas
July 27-29, 2009
Jamestown, RI

LYC’s junior sailors have been traveling the country this summer and excelling in several national 420 regattas, highlighted by Markus Edegran and Teddy Mark finishing second overall at Club 420 Nationals and Andrew Mollerus and Charlie Peck finishing ninth overall, out of 152 teams.
The Club 420 Nationals, co-hosted by Conanicut and Jamestown YCs, featured junior sailors from 15 states, including many of the top juniors on the east coast. Due to the number of competitors, the fleet was split into six groups who raced in three flights. Edegran and Mark never finished worse than seventh in the 10-race series, scoring six finishes in the top 3 overall to finish six points out of first place. Mollerus and Peck kept all but one of their races in the top 10, winning the last race to move up to ninth overall, and first overall out of all youth teams (both skipper and crew younger than 17 years old).
It has been an active summer for the 420 teams. Both Edegran/Mark and Mollerus/Peck competed in the U.S. Youth Championships at the end of June. Edegran/Mark also finished second at the Brooke Gonzalez Memorial Clinic Regatta in Newport, and third overall at the Newport Regatta in July before winning a regional U.S. Sailing Junior Olympic Regatta at Island Heights YC in New Jersey. Mollerus and Peck also competed in the French International 420 national championship.
