LYC Sailors Battle at Buzzards Bay Regatta
August 7-9, 2009
New Bedford, MA

LYC sailors competed in a variety of classes at the 2009 Buzzards Bay Regatta, hosted by New Bedford YC, with Kerry Klingler winning the J/80 division and summer sailing member David Meleney and Elizabeth Hawkins placing third in the Vanguard 15 class.
Buzzards Bay Regatta, commonly referred to as “BBR” by New England sailors, is known for big breeze and tough competition. Past J/80 world champion Kerry Klingler, sailing with LYC member Doug Lynn, dominated the 21-boat J/80 division, scoring four firsts and two seconds in the 7-race series to win by 14 points. Defending BBR Vanguard 15 champs David Meleney and Elizabeth Hawkins scored three straight bullets when the breeze came up on Saturday, but were disqualified from Sunday’s race for hitting the gate boat during a “rabbit start”, causing them to drop to third overall in the 34-boat fleet.
Other LYC sailors who made the trip to BBR included 505 sailors Ted Ferrarone (4th) and summer sailing member Matt Barry (3rd on points Saturday and Sunday), Laser sailors Trey Brazill (23rd in full rigs), William Gleysteen (13th in Radials) and Matt Zupon (15th in Radials), and a healthy contingent of Club 420 sailors, led by Andrew Mollerus and Charlie Peck’s 9th place finish out of 120 boats, along with Thomas Gallagher (80), Andrew Schlegel (83) and Lou Magarelli (100).
