LYC Teams Sweep Major Edlu Awards
May 14, 2011
Larchmont, NY
LYC teams won the overall IRC and PHRF titles in the 56th annual Edlu Race, a 32-mile day race from LYC to Eaton’s Neck and back. Peter Bauer’s Hinckley 38 Bonzer recorded the best corrected time of the 51 boats in the race to win the Edlu Trophy, and also won the Wilfred Kluss Trophy for the best corrected time in the PHRF class. Buttons Padin, driving Commodore Carl Olsson’s J/105 Morning Glory, won the 24-boat IRC class and the Nyala Trophy despite being the smallest boat in IRC.

The 2011 edition of the race began much like the 2010 version -- a light east/southeast wind that left teams struggling to reach Eaton’s Neck. A southwest wind filled from astern, allowing the race to reset at the turning mark of G “11” as the back half of the fleet, particularly those who hugged the Long Island shore, caught the leaders. The fleet had a pleasant fetch back to Larchmont in a freshening breeze that touched the low teens on the way home. Lawrence Dickie’s new Ker 43 Ptarmigan from Riverside YC, managed by LYC member Chad Corning, was the first boat to finish the course in its inaugural race, winning the Black Watch Bowl and the Sayers Trophy for fastest elapsed time.

10 LYC-flagged boats competed in the race, with past commodore Jan Smeets’s J/133 Bacchanal taking second in IRC 1, only 70 seconds behind its sistership from American YC, Ron Richman’s Antidote. H.L. DeVore’s J/44 Honahlee finished third in IRC 1.
