Larchmont Yacht Club Wins Glencairn Trophy For Third Straight Year
October 23, 2010
Larchmont, NY
Larchmont Yacht Club successfully defended the Glencairn Trophy for the third straight year, led by an undefeated record by its varsity team. The Glencairn is an interclub challenge for the YRALIS Team Racing Championship, and the 2010 match featured a three-way tie for the title that required multiple tiebreakers to determine the overall results.
Team LYC won the Aileen Trophy and the Glencairn Trophy. From left to right (row 1): David Dowd, Cardwell Potts, Peter Beardsley, Jay Rhame. Row 2: Andy Kaplan, Rob Dailey, Bizzy Monte-sano, Julie Wilson, Buttons Padin, Patrick Curran, Roland Schulz and Doug Lynn.
In preparation for the Glencairn, Marine Facilities worked feverishly to winterize all the central harbor moorings, creating acres of clear water for racing right off the Club’s front docks. Because of a west-northwest breeze and a course set close to land to allow for spectators, conditions were challenging for competitors. PRO Paul Lennon and LYC team racing chairman, John Baxter had to do four separate resets of the 5-leg “Digital N” racecourse due to the puffy, shifty winds.
The Glencairn Trophy is awarded to the yacht club with the best combined team score between its Varsity Division and Masters Division. After four round robins, there was a three-way tie for the overall title. New York YC and Riverside YC fielded competitive teams, with Riverside YC winning the Masters Division (and with it, the Bumblebee Trophy), Larchmont YC winning the Varsity division with a perfect 8-0 record along with the Aileen Trophy, and New York YC placing second in both divisions. On the first tie-breaker, LYC won the title of most overall wins, and, on the second tiebreaker, New York placed second, with the most head-to-head wins after a sail-off between the varsity teams. At the end of the day, a varsity all-star team competed in a one-race sailoff versus a masters all-star team, with the masters converting a 2,5,6 at the windward mark into a 2,3,4 that they held the rest of the race, earning the Masters sailors’ bragging rights for the next 12 months.
LYC’s Varsity team was captained by Jay Rhame, and skippers, Cardwell Potts and David Dowd, with Peter Beardsley and summer sailing members, Julie Wilson and Patrick Curran crewing. LYC’s Masters were led by Rob Dailey, Andy Kaplan, and Doug Lynn as skippers, with Bizzy Monte-sano, Roland Schulz, and Chris Marx rounding out the team.
