LYC Juniors Victorious in Dorade Trophy and

Beach Point Overnight

August 16-18, 2010

Larchmont, NY

LYC junior sailors completed a clean sweep of their big boat schedule by winning their divisions in the Dorade Trophy and the Beach Point Overnight.  LYC fielded two teams, one sailing Vice Commodore Carl Olsson’s J/105 Morning Glory and the other sailing Harold Edegran’s J/105 Conundrum.

The wind was a late arrival to the Dorade Trophy, but eventually a light southerly filled to allow for two good races.  Sharp off the line in Race 1, Morning Glory sailed a solid race to come a close second.  In Race 2, Morning Glory was OCS but upon restarting found the favored side of the course to lead at the weather mark and extend her lead for a comfortable win.  The stellar performance gave Morning Glory the win in her 10-boat division, beating a team from Riverside YC by two points.  Conundrum finished eighth overall with an eighth and a seventh in the two races.

Unlike the fire and brimstone conditions from 2009, the 2010 Beach Point Overnight was sailed in moderate conditions.  Morning Glory was on pace again and won her division comfortably, missing the overall title by less than two and a half minutes to a team from Pequot YC.  It was an LYC 1-2 on the podium in Division B as Conundrum found her form and came second to her hometown rival.

Team Morning Glory consisted of Lou Magarelli (skipper), Laura Lubben (Navigator, Trim), Ben Kaplan (bow), Stephen Clark (Pit/Trimmer) and Alex Liggins (Pit/Trim).  Team Conundrum consisted of Andrew Schlegel (skipper), Lucy Hadley (Navigator/Trim), Graham Pough (bow), Matt Bialo (Pit/Trim), Ian Brown (Pit/Trim) and JP Hadley (Trim).  Instructor Connor Fitzpatrick, assisted by Jon Goldsmith, made sure the teams were well prepared for the unique challenges of big boat racing.
