LYC Women Compete at The Commodore Mendez Trophy

June 20, 2009

Larchmont, NY

What started out as a dull and gloomy day developed into a very pleasant afternoon of racing for The Commodore Mendez Trophy regatta. This trophy is awarded annually to the winning skipper and crew in the Club’s Women’s Invitational Regatta.

After a short postponement, a whisper of a southerly filled to allow for two short windward-leeward races followed by four longer windward-leeward-windward courses. The competition was good – 3 of the 5 boats scored at least one bullet, with the rest hot on their heels.

In the end, a tie-breaker was needed to determine the winner. Teresa Laughlin and Kate Manion won with three first place finishes to Molly Baxter and Anne Marie Martin’s two. Third place honors went to Dorsey Roseberry and Kaycee Cherashore, winners of the first race. The other two teams who put plenty of pressure on the leaders were Pam Washington and Caroline Romans, and Liv Grey and Nancy Feldtmose.

Commodore Mendez was on hand to present the prizes to the winners and share some wine and cheese with all the competitors and officials at the end of a very satisfying day.
