Mendez Regatta

June 10, 2010

Larchmont, NY

This annual regatta, commissioned by former LYC Commodore John M. Mendez, is an invitational for women in western Long Island Sound.

On the evening of June 10, LYC hosted 20 women representing five yacht clubs on the Sound – Manhasset Bay, American, Indian Harbor, Riverside, and Larchmont. The sailors boarded LYC’s Ideal 18 Fleet in a light southerly breeze, enough to race but not very exciting. The first race in 4 to 6 knot breeze faded to almost a drifter for the final few boats. The Race Committee mercifully shortened course for the second race. With plenty of daylight remaining, the Race Committee started the sequence for what was expected by everyone to be another light air race, but the competitors were pleasantly surprised when a large patch of dark water moved towards the fleet from the east. The Committee managed to fire off two more very exciting races in a 10 to 12 knot easterly, and all the competitors returned to the moorings with smiles on their faces.

The Commodore Mendez Trophy was awarded to Clemmie Everett and Karen Quirke of American Yacht Club, with first place finishes in every race. Second place went to Larchmont’s own Nancy White and Liv Gray. American stepped up again with Alix Hahn and Carolyn Russell to taking home the third place trophy.

The regatta was followed by a presentation ceremony in the LYC Library and a very elegant dinner, complete with candles and flowers, in the Ford Room.
