LYC Juniors Continue Successful
Summer Season
August 2011
LYC juniors continued to sail fast in the August heat, taking home trophies from all parts of the East Coast and competing in major championships. The highlight of the month was Katie DeVore and Caitlin Campbell becoming the first LYC team since 1982 to win the Midget Bowl at the JSALIS Pixel Championship with a near perfect score.

LYC hosted the 2011 JSA Optimist Championship August 10-11,
completing six races in two days.
DeVore and Campbell took five firsts in six races at Roton Point Sailing Association, their scoreline marred only by a retirement after the finish when they discovered they had hit the finish pin without exonerating themselves in a race where they crossed the line first. Christopher Pace and William Gallagher finished fifth in the 22-boat fleet. Results.

To end the JSA summer season, LYC’s oldest juniors turned from dinghies to keelboats and continued LYC’s strong run of success in the Dorade and Beach Point Regattas. Harald Edegran lent his J/105 Conundrum to one junior team, which topped Division 2 at the Dorade Trophy after three around-the-buoys races. A second LYC team sailed Commodore Carl Olsson’s J/105 Morning Glory to fourth overall, winning the final race. Results. The following day, the juniors participated in the Beach Point Club’s annual overnight race, with Conundrum and Morning Glory placing second and third in Division B. Results.
Outside the Sound, LYC sent five teams to US Sailing’s Youth Championship, hosted by New York YC in Newport. Brothers Andrew and Matthew Mollerus placed sixth in the hotly-contested 29er class. 29er results. Reiner Eenkema van Dijk with crew Spencer McDonough of Indian Harbor YC placed eighth in the Club 420 division, with Casey Klingler and Julia Rew 15th, Claudia Taselaar and Alexandra Liggins in 32nd and Harry Koeppel and Nick Gallagher in 34th. Club 420 results.
While some juniors took a much-needed vacation before the school year started, a few other junior teams slipped in extra days of racing north of the border at the annual CORK Regatta in Kingston, Ontario. Drew Gallagher crewed for Jordan Factor to place second in the 85-boat 420 division, with brothers Thomas and John Gallagher finishing eighth. Results.
