LYC Places Third at NYYC

Vanguard 15 Team Race

Team LYC placed third out of 20 teams at the annual New York YC Vanguard 15 Team Race Regatta.  The regatta, which is one of the most competitive team races of the year, served as a warmup for the upcoming U.S. Sailing Team Race Championship, the Hinman Trophy, to be held at Beverly YC in Massachusetts September 25-27. 

 

LYC was in second place after Saturday’s racing and a strong performance through the round robins put LYC head-to-head against nemesis and defending world champs Silver Panda.  LYC dropped to third overall in the standings after a race committee scoring error prevented two other teams, which also had LYC sailors on them, from racing in the gold division championship with the final four teams.  Team LYC consisted of Danny Pletsch, Cardwell Potts, Ryan Costello, Maggie Lumkes, Julia Southworth and Melissa Pumphrey.

The scoring error prevented two teams that also had LYC sailors from competing in the gold division championship round, and the recourse for this scoring error was to count each affected team’s total wins in their overall score.  As a result, the One-Timers, with LYC sailors Sean and Susan Doyle, finished second overall and Tap N’ Go, with LYC summer sailing members Scott Hogan and Jamie Gilman, finished fourth overall.  Also competing in the event were Rebecca Liggins on Find Me A Job (7th overall) and summer sailing members David Meleney and Elizabeth Hawkins on Team Trouble (8th overall).
