LYC Junior Sailors Compete at

U.S. Youth Championship

June 25-30, 2009
Greenwich, CT

Clear air was hard to find in the competitive Club 420 division

at the U.S. Youth Sailing Championship.

Three of LYC’s best junior sailors competed in the 2009 U.S. Youth Sailing Championship at Indian Harbor YC in Greenwich, CT. Markus Edegran (with crew Teddy Mark) and Andrew Mollerus (with crew Charlie Peck) skippered teams in the Club 420 division while Rebecca Liggins crewed for Chanel Miller of Lauderdale YC (Florida), also in Club 420s. In addition, Mark is a former member of the LYC junior program.

Teams are selected to compete at the Youth Championship based on sailing resumes and the event attracts the country’s best junior sailors. The LJYC sailors represented the highest number of LYC juniors to compete at the Youth Championship in recent memory. Summer Long Island Sound conditions dominated the event, with less than 10 knots of wind and chop for all but the final day when a 12-15 knot southerly filled.

Liggins had the best overall result of any LYC sailor, steadily improving with Miller over the course of the regatta to finish 19th overall out of 28 teams. Liggins will take her sailing skills to the varsity sailing team at Hobart College in fall 2009.

Edegran and Mark finished 20th overall, ending the regatta with a second and a fourth in the 11-race series. Mollerus and Peck started the regatta with a second, but were done in by three “OCS” results where they were on the course side of the starting line and did not return to restart, dropping them to 23rd overall.

For all of the LYC juniors, this was their first appearance at the Youth Championship and Edegran and Mollerus are both young enough to be eligible for future Youth Championships. For complete results, please visit the event website.
