Sail Newport Youth Regatta: Another great Showing by LYC Junior Sailors
June 3-4, 2017
Four LYC Opti sailors headed to Newport, Rhode Island, over the weekend of June 3-4, for the Sail Newport Youth Challenge regatta. Ten races were sailed over two days amid shifting winds and the constant threat of thunderstorms. Wyatt Bischoff, Margaux Cowles, and Morgan Gochberg finished 2nd, 5th, and 25th overall, respectively. LYC's Owen Bischoff kicked off his summer season by sailing some races in the white fleet. Carl Olsson's Morning Glory 3rd in J/109 East Coast Championship

Sailing his Morning Glory, former LYC Commodore Carl Olsson finished third in the highly competitive 17-boat J/109 fleet during last weekend's Cedar Point One-Design Regatta giving him a spot on the podium for this key championship. LYC Team Second Viper 640Atlantic Coast Championship

A new Viper in the LYC fleet this year is Great Scott, owned by Peter Beardsley and Jay Rhame. Great Scott has traveled a lot for a brand new boat including a trip to Hampton, VA, last weekend for the Viper 640 Atlantic Coast Championship. Sailing with Jay and Peter was Rachel Beardsley. In a light air regatta with 15 Vipers racing, it was a close battle between Great Scott and former LYC Summer Member Zeke Horowitz's Jenny. In the end, after seven races, it was Jenny that took the title by a single point. It was an interesting scoreline as Jenny won the first four races and, staging a terrific comeback, Great Scott won the final three. Maybe one more race should have been sailed!!! This Championship was sailed as part of Hampton Yacht Club's Southern Bay Race Week that attracted both one-design and handicap racers from all over the east coast. Annapolis Newport Race
June 2-3, 2017
Two LYC boats competed in the 2017 edition of the Annapolis to Newport Race. After 32 boats started the race on June 2 with the balance of 16 starters on June 3, the winners have been confirmed today. Black Pearl, a Carkeek 47 skippered by Stefan Jentzsch of Germany, took top honors in IRC 1 and was also overall winner. Placing first in IRC 1 Racer/Cruiser and third in IRC Overall was Andrew & Linda Weiss' Christopher Dragon with LYC members Butch Ulmer, Rich du Moulin, Doug Lynn, and Patrick Johnson aboard. Finishing second in IRC 1 Racer/Cruiser and sixth in IRC Overall was Chris Sheehan's Warrior Won. Aboard with Sheehan from LYC were HL DeVore, Chad Corning, Patrick Slattery, Katie DeVore, Ryan Zupon, Peter Carpenter, and Peter Bauer. In addition to the two LYC home port yachts racing, Warrior, a vintage Volvo 70 took line honors and broke the race course record. Aboard Warrior was former LYC Junior Sailor Scott Tompkins. LYC Juniors Named Collegiate Sailing All Americans

Larchmont Yacht Club is proud to announce that three of our former Junior Sailors have been recognized as part of the 2016-17 College All American Sailing team. Ty Ingram (MIT '18) was named an All American skipper, and Harry Koeppel (Boston College '17) an All American Honorable Mention. . . also a very, very impressive honor. Ty and Harry are joined on this collegiate sailing honor roll by Casey Klingler who, while in the process of helping her Yale Women's team win the Collegiate Women's Championship, received the honor of being cited as Runner-up for the Quantum Women's Sailor of the Year and being named a Women's All American Skipper in her own right. 2017 Robie Pierce Regatta for Sailors with Disabilities a Huge Success

Last week, from Thursday, June 1 through Sunday, June 4, over 50 sailors with disabilities gathered at American Yacht Club to participate in the Robie Pierce Regatta. This was the ninth Robie that is run jointly by LYC and AYC with the venue alternating every year. This was a particularly inspiring Robie as the fleet included two 14-year olds and some early twenty-somethings. For these youngsters, as well as the older sailors, this annual gathering of disabled competitors, able bodied sailors, and scores of LYC and AYC volunteers will be one of their 2017 highlights. The LYC team, led by Robie co-chair Buttons Padin included over 30 LYC members playing roles that ranged from installing sailor adaptations in the two Clubs' Ideal 18s and helping with registration to driving medical boats and housing visiting sailors. Five LYC Junior Sailors Raced in the 2017 i420 MidWinter Champs

Carmen and Emma Cowles beat out thirty-three teams to claim the International 420 Midwinter Championship and were also awarded the top girls team trophy. The regatta was held February 18-20 on the ocean south of Government Cut and east of Virginia Key in Miami, FL. Tommy Rice and Trevor Bornarth finished ten points behind to place second followed by LYC's Emma Kaneti and Ciara Rodriguez-Horan from CRYC in third. Two LYC Sailiors on the Podium atArizona Yacht Club Regatta

LYC's Peter Beardsley and Buttons Padin flew west last weekend to do some—get ready—desert sailing. The conditions they encountered weren't exactly what they had xpected. Rain and strong winds marked Arizona Yacht Club's 2017 Leukemia Cup-Birthday Regatta sailed on Lake Pleasant, just north of Phoenix. Friday was gorgeous, Saturday not so much, Sunday was better, but who needs cold and rainy? Obviously the weather gods hadn't read the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce's tourism brochure that called for balmy, warm, and sunny days with light to moderate winds. As the California coast was getting blasted with weather, Arizona experienced the outcroppings of those western storms with winds as high as 20 knots at times and rain. Did someone mention that it rained. . . and was cold? Whatever. It was still a great weekend of Viper racing with good competition, fun shore side activities, and the traditional great Viper sailor camaraderie. When it was over, Jeff Grange (Santa Barbara, CA), racing Venom with his wife Caroline and fellow Santa Barbara sailor Mike Cooney, had mowed down the Viper competition: his single "bad" race (a third) tossed out, leaving him with a total of 9 points in 9 scored races. Grange also won the overall prize of this western-themed regatta—a huge custom cowboy belt buckle. The Viper fleet can't wait to see him wearing that over his hiking pants. Tim Carter (Long Beach, CA) sailing Cobra with Buttons Padin and Phoenix/SoCal racer Luce Sahali fought an epic battle for second with host club's Tony Chapman, Peter Beardsley, and local Jonathan Abel-Millman. Throughout the regatta there was usually only one or two points separating second and third. Carter/Padin/Sahali took a one-point lead on Friday and clung to it through Sunday Reactions of the east coast sailors to sailing on a desert lake: "For me, this was only my second time sailing in fresh water. . . and that was a joy," noted Padin who continued, "However the lake. . . situated 150 feet below the canyon rim. . . with huge Sonora cacti just 100 yards beyond the windward mark. . . was so different from our normal Long Island Sound sailing that I felt like a tourist the entire regatta. " Beardsley noted, "It's a wild venue. The racing was really close and the hospitality was excellent. It was a bit of bad luck to be there for two of the 10 days they'll get precipitation this year, but I feel like a jerk complaining about rain in the desert, and it may have been three of the best wind days on the lake this year, so I'll take it. " Tony Chapman and Kelly Beaver host the regatta for the Vipers and Kelly is always there the first night to open her renowned Mini Bar. Viper sailors have all read about this alcoholic "Mini Bar" phenomenon reading previous AYC Leukemia Cup reports. . . but it wasn't until Padin and Beardsley saw that it was her red BMW Mini with the back lid open acting as the post race bar that it finally clicked. Even with the chilly and "damp" weather, the racing was great, the partying was legendary (including Phoenix's Mike Hester dislocating his shoulder only to have Canadian sailor Nick Kofski's crew Betsy Carson reset it), and the fellowship was unmatched. Many SoCal sailors will be back for the 2018 AYC Leukemia Cup Regatta as well as two New Yorkers. BTW, their skippers gave to Padin and Beardsley their key prize keepers (cowboy hats) and the two looked like total Yahoos getting on the plane the next day! Click here for results.
LYC Cate Mollerus featured in Sailing World's"Junior All-Stars on the Rise"

Cate Mollerus, 17, of LYC crews on a 29er with skipper Louisa Nordstrom, of Osprey, Florida. Together they qualified for the World Sailing Youth Championship in New Zealand. Cate started by sailing Optimists but found her passion for racing team when she was 14. When not sailing, Cate enjoys playing varsity field hockey and is captain of her high school team. LYC Sailors Sweep Podiums at Manhasset Bay YC New Year's Regatta

Sailed on Saturday, December 31 and Sunday, January 1, in sunny Manhasset Bay, three LYC winter sailing members swept the podium for this traditional year-end regatta. Topping the 18-boat fleet were Simon Strauss sailing with Anne Patin recording a commanding win over the 12-race event. Fourteen points behind Strauss and Patin were Anne's father Paul Jon Patin and Felicity Ryan followed by Steve Benjamin with crew Brooks Daley. Being sailed at the same time, MBYC's Ideal 18 New Year's Regatta found LYC sailors in two of the top three spots. Peter and Rachel Beardsley with Simon Karstoft won six of the dozen races placing second in four more. In third place were LYC's Pam Washington and Matt Temares just four points out of second. LYC frostbiters made quite the impression on MBYC over the weekend accounting for 11 of the 18-boat IC fleet and two of the six Ideals. That is just one more example of the depth and breadth of the sailors seen sailing off the LYC front docks on Sunday afternoons.
